Making Sense of Muslim Affairs from Within
The Center for Strategic Muslim Affairs (CSMA) is an independent research initiative focused on strengthening governance, cooperation, and strategic capacity within Muslim societies.
Our approach is grounded in the concept of functional unity—advancing practical cooperation through shared interests, policy alignment, and institutional coordination. We produces rigorous analysis and actionable insights to support serious, forward-looking policy thinking.
CSMA’s analytical work is centered on understanding the dynamics that shape coordination among Muslim-majority states. Rather than approaching the Muslim world as a unified bloc or a collection of isolated cases, the center examines it as a fragmented but interconnected system.
Coordination and Fragmentation
We examine how and why coordination among Muslim-majority states emerges or fails. Our analysis focuses on identifying patterns of alignment, selective cooperation, and persistent fragmentation across regions.
Intra-Muslim Geopolitical Relations
We study the evolving relationships between Muslim-majority states across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, with a focus on how these relationships shape broader patterns of coordination and division.
Functional Pathways for Cooperation
We explore realistic and issue-based pathways for cooperation, focusing on what forms of coordination are practically achievable under existing constraints rather than idealized models of unity.
